Virtual Private Network connection to CNS

CNS has an obligation to ensure that all information transmitted across the internet is done so in a secure and confidential method.

This requirement for secure data is particularly relevant for the CNS connection to the HMRC system CHIEF. The original designs of CHIEF and CNS were based on private network deployments; security and encryption were not built into the core products. CNS has now invested significantly in resilient high order links to the internet protected and managed by Checkpoint NG firewalls, supported by trained Firewall professional and mature support infrastructures.

To allow access to the CNS core application and onwards to CHIEF over the internet CNS has elected to bring two Virtual Private Network (VPN) products to the market place. Both products have been trialled extensively with key representatives of all sectors of the industry with good success.

CNS Corporate Managed (CM) VPN

CM VPN provides facilities for the customer to work directly with CNS, with the customer taking full responsibility for their internet access and Firewall/security devices. CNS have followed the Communications Electronics Security Group Infosec Assurance and Certification Services (CESG IACS) standards, supported by US and UK government, in the selection of suitable client side Firewall/security products.

CNS Facilities Managed (FM) VPN

Recognising that this is not realistic for all our customers, CNS also offer a facilities managed VPN product which allows customers to work with a CNS approved supplier. The customer gives responsibility for the VPN to the approved supplier for a fully managed service.

In both new products the onus of responsibility for the availability of network access and required bandwidth becomes the full responsibility of the client.
